U.S. Trade Slump Deepens as Trump Tariffs Hit Agricultural Exports
U.S. trade activity has plummeted to levels last seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, with both imports and exports declining sharply. Data from Vizion, a trade analytics firm, shows the downturn initially began with reduced import orders from global manufacturers but has since expanded into a broader export crisis. Agricultural commodities—soybeans, corn, and beef—are among the hardest-hit sectors.
Peter Friedmann, executive director of the Agriculture Transportation Coalition (AgTC), warns of a "full-blown crisis" as port data reveals worsening logistical bottlenecks. The inability to move products to international markets compounds the strain caused by Trump-era tariffs, which now affect nearly all U.S. export categories.
